A boy in school during the 1950's, 60's, 70's & 80's was
disciplined by bending and caned or boys got 6 of the best. Girls were
"wrapped over the knuckles" or had to hold their hands out to get
smacked with a ruler. Even at home during this period, children got hidings or
were disciplined by other means. Today, schools are prohibited from canning
children and a teacher can lose his/her job for discipline a child. In many
countries it is a law that parents cannot discipline a child by giving hidings
by means of hand, belt or a cane. A child can have a father arrested for giving
hidings.
Lack of discipline from children is seen
everywhere and even parents are found lacking in this department.
They say a small tree must be bent at an
early age as once it is grown big & tall it is too late to bend.
Scripture tells us that discipline is
important for all parts of life but especially for children. Let’s read through
the book of Proverbs to see what it says about discipline.
My son, do not despise the discipline of
Yahuah, and do not dislike His correction; for whom Yahuah loves He corrects,
as a father the son whom he delights in - Proverbs 3:11-12.
Children, listen to the discipline of a
father.....Proverbs 4:1.
Then you shall howl in your latter end,
when your flesh and your body are consumed, and shall say, "How I have
hated discipline and my heart has despised correction! - Proverbs 5:11-12.
He dies for lack of discipline, and in the
greatness of his folly (lack of good sense) he goes astray - Proverbs 5:23.
"Accept my discipline, and not silver.....Proverbs 8:10.
”Listen to discipline and became wise, and
do not refuse it - Proverbs
8:33.
He who pays attention to discipline is in
the way of life, but he who refuses blame goes astray - Proverbs 10:17. Whoever loves discipline
loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid - Proverbs 12:1.
A wise son accepts his father's discipline,
but a mocker shall not listen to rebuke - Proverbs 13:1.
Poverty and shame are for him who ignores
discipline, but he who takes careful attention to correction is respected - Proverbs 13:18.
He who spares his rod (thin round wood or
belt or staff) hates his son, but he who loves him, seeks him with discipline -
Proverbs 13:24.
Correction to a child is showing love and
teaching them discipline, but the parent that does not take the time to correct
his child is not showing love. A fool despises his father's discipline, but he
who accepts the correction is clever - Proverbs 15:5.
Discipline is grievous (serious) to him who
forsakes the way; he who hates correction (not accepting blame) dies - Proverbs 15:10.
He who ignores discipline hates himself,
but he who listens to correction gets understanding. The fear of Yahuah is the
discipline of wisdom ...Proverbs
15:32-33.
Discipline your son because there is
expectation (achieve something), and do not set your being (soul) on his
destruction - Proverbs
19:18.
Listen to counsel (advise) and accept
discipline, so that you are wise in your latter end - Proverbs 19:20.
Cease, my son, to hear discipline, and you
shall stray from the words of knowledge - Proverbs 19:27.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a
child; the rod of discipline drives it far from him - Proverbs 22:15.
Bring your heart to discipline, and your
ears to words of knowledge. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you
strike him with a rod, he does not die. Strike him with a rod and deliver his
being (soul) from Sheol (Hell) - Proverbs 23:12-14.
When I saw it, I set my heart on it; I
looked and received discipline: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little
folding of the hands to rest; and your poverty shall come, a prowler, and your
need like an armed man - Proverbs
24:32-34. A rod and correction gives wisdom, but a child unrestrained
(let loose) brings shame to his mother - Proverbs 29:15.
Discipline your son, and he brings you rest
and delight to your life - Proverbs
29:17.
Discipline is still very important for us
today! Satan is responsible for many countries becoming lawless! Lack of
discipline is the cause of human destruction.
